Stargate SG-1 was a popular science fiction television show that ran for 10 seasons from 1997 to 2007. It was based on the 1994 film Stargate and built greatly upon the original film’s story and mythology.
The series centered around an alien device called a Stargate, which is a portal that allows for inter-galactic travel to other planets.
SG-1, along with other SG teams, was an elite team put together to go through the Stargate and explore these new worlds.
The concept itself serves to automatically spike the viewer’s interest, and it could not have been better executed.
SG-1, composed of Jack O’Neill, Daniel Jackson, Samantha Carter, and an alien named Teal’c, goes on amazing adventures that span the scope of science and fantasy. The viewer is regularly introduced to new cultures, intriguing technology, new and interesting villains, and even black holes!
Stargate SG-1 managed to use many theoretical scientific concepts in very believable ways, making sure that the viewer never had to suspend too much disbelief. After a while you begin to have no trouble accepting the show’s take on wormhole travel, alternate universes, and parallel dimensions.
Despite all of the action and adventure, what really made this show a hit were the unforgettable characters. The original SG-1 team easily captured the viewer’s interest and attention, and later characters continued to do the same. It is extremely easy and fun to root for the show’s “good guys.”
Even though Stargate SG-1 had very clear boundaries between the “good guys” and the “bad guys,” no character on either side of the divide was left in a one-dimensional light. Though you always knew which side to cheer for, the stories and characters were still very nuanced and thought-provoking.
So if you’re looking for some good science fiction to watch, the very best place to start is with Stargate SG-1. This series offers something for everyone, and the best part is that 10 whole seasons are waiting for you to dive right into!
